Women's Tennis Team Stages Seahawk Invitational

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW women's tennis coach Hans Olsen gets his first look at his new team when the Seahawks play host to Campbell, East Tennessee State and Wisconsin in the Seahawk Invitational this weekend at the UNCW Courts.

Olsen took over the helm of the program in late summer and has been busy overseeing the program heading into a fall schedule that includes five tournaments. This weekend's event will feature a hidden dual format with a six-game set and no ad scoring.

Action gets under way on Friday with doubles at 2:30 p.m., followed by singles at 3:30 p.m. The event is free and parking is available next to the courts.

"We're very excited about hosting the Seahawk Invitational," said Olsen. "It will be a great weekend of competition with a strong field of college players. The Seahawks are looking forward to getting our fall season started."

UNCW returns five players from last year's team that finished 9-9 in the spring season. Veteran Christine Kharkevitch (Second Baptist/Houston, Texas) headlines the group, while juniors Hollie Champion (Butler/Charlotte, N.C.), Annika Sillanpaa (Universal School/Tampere, Finland), Alix Theodossiou (Asheville/Asheville, N.C.) and Thai Thompson (Cape Fear Academy/Wilmington, N.C.) give the team more veteran experience.

Sillanpaa, from Tampere, Finland, earned Second-Team All-CAA honors in singles one year ago and teamed up with Kharkevitch for Second-Team in doubles as well.

Three newcomers will give the Seahawks eight players on the roster. Sabrina Barisano (The Ursuline School/New Rochelle, N.Y.), Laura Gomez (Laurel Springs/Cali, Colombia) and Madara Straume (Murjanu Sporta Gimnazija/Jurmala, Latvia) each make their Seahawk debut this weekend.

Following this weekend's tourney, the Seahawks travel to Columbia, S.C., to compete in the USC Fall Invitational on Oct. 2-4.
