WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW men's basketball team tries to be a not-so-friendly date Saturday when the Seahawks get together with Northeastern for a Valentine's Day men's basketball clash late Saturday with the Huskies at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks, 14-10 overall and 9-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association, are tied for second place in the conference standings with the Huskies, 17-9 and 9-4. William & Mary (16-8, 10-3) is clinging to a one-game lead over the two teams.

UNCW and NU are set to tip off at 8:05 p.m. in the annual Homecoming game at Trask Coliseum. Saturday's contest concludes a three-game home stand for the Seahawks, who lost to William & Mary on Feb. 7 before topping the College of Charleston this past Wednesday.

"We know Northeastern is a very talented team and we'll have our hands full," said first-year UNCW Head Coach Kevin Keatts. "They're coming off a great game at Hofstra. By their record and their play, they're one of the hottest teams in the league."

The Seahawks are coming off a 58-45 victory over the College of Charleston on Wednesday night in a back-and-forth affair at Trask Coliseum. The Cougars controlled the first half and jumped in front, 30-24, at intermission before the Seahawks stormed back with a stifling 22-0 run down the stretch to break away and sweep the regular season series.

The senior triumvirate of Freddie Jackson, Addison Spruill and Cedrick Williams continue to provide plenty of scoring and leadership for Keatts' first team at UNCW. Jackson has started 22-of-24 games and tops the club with 14.3 points per game, along with 5.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists. Spruill has also opened all but two outings and ranks second in scoring (14.1 ppg) and first in rebounding (6.6 rpg). Williams stands fifth in scoring (7.7 ppg) and second in rebounding (6.3 rpg).

UNCW, picked to finish ninth in the 10-team circuit, is the surprise team of the CAA and Keatts and his staff have engineered one of the best bounce back seasons in the land. Heading into the weekend, the Seahawks are tied for the 11th best turnaround among NCAA Division I schools.

The Seahawks are playing on Valentine's Day for the 18th time since the program started. UNCW stands 7-10 on the love-themed day, including 4-4 at home and 3-6 on the road. The Huskies are 13-14 in Valentine's contests.

Northeastern made its way to the coast early Friday after dispatching Hofstra for the eighth straight time, 79-68, on Thursday night in Hempstead, N.Y. David Walker and Scott Eatherton combined for 44 points in the road win for Bill Coen's club. Eatherton scored 20 of his season-high 24 points in the second half and Walker chipped in 20 points and a career-best eight assists in the key win.

"We have to do a tremendous job as a team defending all of those guys," Keatts said. "Not one individual can guard those guys. They do a really job good. They shoot the ball and score from the inside out. It's going to be a tough challenge because they score the ball from three or four different positions."

UNCW defeated NU in the first matchup of the two teams back on Jan. 5 in Boston. In his CAA road debut, Keatts piloted the Seahawks to a 75-68 triumph over the Huskies when freshman playmaker Jordon Talley erupted for 21 points and the team shot a solid 54.4 percent at historic Matthews Arena. Spruill added 20 points and Jackson pitched in 18 as the Seahawks never trailed in the contest.

NU leads the 15-game series by a slim 8-7 margin, but the Seahawks have won the last two pairings and stand 4-2 against the Huskies at Trask Coliseum.

Keatts said, "Any time you're at home, it's important to win. Any win during February in conference play is important. When you're coming down the home stretch, you have to take care of your home court."

Following Saturday's clash with the Huskies, the Seahawks close out the season with four games, including three on the road. UNCW travels to the upper Mid-Atlantic next week for a two-game swing to Delaware (Feb. 19) and Towson (Feb. 21).
