WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The resilient UNCW men's basketball team, fresh off a pair of clutch road victories in the Colonial Athletic Association, returns home late Saturday for the first of two meetings this season with Towson's Tigers.

The Seahawks, 10-8 and 5-2, are the surprise team in the CAA this season after being picked to finish ninth in the 10-team league. Instead, first-year Head Coach KevIn Keatts has the team playing with loads of confidence behind a stingy defense and timely late-game play.

The latest example, a 58-56 overtime victory at the College of Charleston on Wednesday, gives the Seahawks a 3-1 record in conference road games after the club won a total of three league roadies in the last three seasons combined.

"We found a way to go 2-1 and had an opportunity to go 3-0 in the last three games," said Keatts, whose club takes on the Tigers at 8:05 p.m. at Trask Coliseum. "Each game was totally different, but we had three solid road games."

UNCW's veteran backcourt of Freddie Jackson and Addison Spruill, both local products, have been instrumental in the program's rejuvenation this season. Jackson, a springy 6-4, 185-pounder out of New Hanover High School, leads the team in scoring with 15.1 points per game and his name dots many of the offensive categories in the CAA weekly statistical rankings. Spruill, a muscle-bound 6-4, 225-pounder, ranks second on the team in scoring at 14.1 ppg and paces the squad in rebounding with 6.8 rebounds each outing.

The Seahawks have won five of their last six games and every contest was decided by seven points or less. This season's ledger includes overtime victories over Liberty, Delaware and the College of Charleston.

Keatts said, "I'm looking forward to Saturday because we have our students back and people in the community are buying in. I think the fans are starting to come out because they respect the fact that we're playing hard."

Towson, 9-11 and 2-5, visits the coast after opening a two-game swing to North Carolina with a narrow 53-51 decision Thursday night over Elon at Alumni Gym. Freshman forward Mike Morsell sank the game-winning shot down the stretch to lift Pat Skerry's club past the Phoenix in a tense low-scoring affair.

Sophomore forward John Davis (6-5, 215) and junior guard Four McGlynn (6-2, 180) anchor Towson's balanced attack with 11.7 points per game apiece. Six Tigers are collecting at least six points a game for Skerry, who is completing his fourth season with the Baltimore-area team.

Like the Seahawks, the Tigers have also had their share of close calls, with six contests decided by five points or less. Towson has dropped its five games in the CAA by an average of just 7.2 ppg.

"Towson is a team that you can't prepare for individually because they play so many guys, so you have to prepare for them as a team," said Keatts. "My biggest concern is that they're sixth in the country in offensive rebounds. They are a tremendous offensive rebounding team and probably the best we've played all year.

"It's one of those games that we have to put bodies on guys because if we don't, it will be a long night because they're capable of having 20 or 25 offensive rebounds against us."

UNCW and Towson are meeting for the 31st time overall and 13th time at Trask Coliseum. The Seahawks own a 17-13 advantage in the series, but the Tigers have won four of the last five pairings and six of the last 10. UNCW does own a commanding 10-2 advantage in the friendly confines of Trask.

The Seahawks have 11 games remaining in the regular season, including six at home, where UNCW leads the CAA in attendance this season.
