WILMINGTON, North Carolina - The UNCW men's and women's tennis team head into the final day of the UNCW Collegiate Tennis Invitational hoping to build on the experience gained against good competition the last two days.
In men's play, the top-seeded doubles tandem of Chris Cooprider and Kosta Blank advanced to the semifinals of the Flight A doubles draw with a convincing 8-3 victory over Tulane's Shaye Wali and Rodrigo Rappaccioli. Cooprider and Blank will face VCU's Alexis Huegas and Camil Salomon at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
Freshman Zach Hublitz is making the most of his collegiate debut. The McLean, Va., product will play Tulane's Iain Sneddon in the championship of the Flight A singles bracket. Hublitz made the finals by rallying past Old Dominion's Alfredo Rodriguez, 1-6, 6-2, 7-5.
On the women's side, two Seahawk teams are still alive in Flight A doubles. Olga Blank and Christina Lee reached the semifinals with an 8-3 decision over Furman's Olivia Maurice and Kelly Sullivan, while Angie Sekeley and Kelly Cameron are in the semis on the bottom half of the draw following an 8-3 verdict over West Virginia's Ikttesh Chahal and Emily Mathis.
Lee and Cameron both lost out in the semifinals of the Flight A singles bracket on Saturday. Furman's Lauren Kline ousted Lee, 6-3, 6-4, and Tina Tehrani of Georgetown topped Cameron, 6-4, 6-3.
In Flight B singles, junior Christina Riley battled her way into the consolation championship with a 6-0, 6-0, blasting of Virginia Tech's Katie Blow. Riley will face Furman's Jenny Porter in the consolation finals.
Freshman Hamilton Lovett, meanwhile, continues to sail through Flight C singles. The Raleigh product is 3-0 in the bracket.
"I was really pleased with how we competed after a long day of tennis yesterday," said Jenny Garrity, UNCW's veteran women's coach. "We showed up today with a lot of energy in singles and I think we gained a lot through the wins and losses.
"We had many people from the community come out to support all of the teams and we appreciate their support. It showed in our matches and our players really felt like the community cared about them a great deal."
Many of the top collegiate players in the country are competing at Empie Park. The UNCW men's and women's teams are playing host to 13 schools and 95 players. Play begins at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday. Admission is free.
