Baseball

Andrew Cain, Baseball

UNCW baseball player, Andrew Cain, is a Greenville, N.C., product who plays the outfield.  He is in his third year at UNCW and his third season with the Seahawks.

Q: Both of your grandfathers played college football, one at East Carolina and the other at Wake Forest.  What made you decide to play baseball and why did you choose UNCW?

A: Growing up, I was tall but not the biggest kid so I never got into football, even though I liked watching it. I played basketball and baseball, but got hurt a lot playing basketball, so I started playing more baseball. I was deciding between ECU and UNCW, but since I'm from Greenville I decided to come somewhere different so I chose UNCW.

Q: What is your favorite thing to do in your free time?

A: I really like to listen to music. I like pretty much everything from country and rap to classic rock. The one genre I don't like is heavy rock.

Q: What food is your weakness?

A:  Probably candy...I really like Sour Patch Kids, especially the watermelon ones.

Q: Who is your favorite baseball player and if you could ask him any question what would it be?

A: Manny Ramirez and I would have to ask him how he hits so well.

Q: What is the last movie you saw and did you enjoy it?

A:  I saw "The Town" with Ben Affleck and I really liked it. It is probably one of my favorites. I generally like action and suspense films.

Q: Last season you suffered an abdominal injury.  How did you hurt yourself and are you fully recovered?

A: It was just overuse really and it could have happened to anyone.  I saw a lot of different doctors and struggled to get a correct diagnosis, but I'm completely better and 100 percent now.

Q: If you were an ice cream flavor, what would you be and why?

A: Probably vanilla because I'm a pretty laid back person.

Q: What is one, unique strength that you bring to your team?

A: I'd like to think I'm a leader on the team. I try to bring everybody together and lead by example, especially for the younger guys.  I also like to set a good tone for the practice and games.

Q: If today was your last day on earth, what would you do and why?

A: I would spend a lot of time with my family and closest friends.  I'd probably go skydiving because I like to do extreme things and I'd have nothing to lose.

Q: From the time you started UNCW, as a freshman until now, is there anything you wish you had done differently?

A: I wish I had gotten into the program a little more in my freshman year. I didn't give it my all and had trouble transitioning from high school ball to college, but then I realized I had to step it up and I think I have these last two years.

Q: You are set to graduate in May of 2012.  What are your plans after you graduate?

A:  I hope to be playing professional baseball by that time.  Hopefully, I'll be somewhere where I can enjoy warm weather.
