The UNCW Department of Athletics has unveiled its strategic plan, "Focused on Excellence," a comprehensive
document that maps out a course for the growing department over the next five
years.
"There are many issues
and challenges that face intercollegiate athletics, from student-athlete welfare
to economic considerations. It is so
important, now more than ever, to share our vision and provide a blueprint for
the next five years", said Kelly Mehrtens, UNCW's Athletics Director. "Our
staff and coaches are committed to excellence, and I am confident our
department's future is moving in the right direction to ensure we meet our
challenges head on."
The strategic plan
contains the department's mission, core values, and strategic initiatives,
including sections on our department units, and athletic program profiles. While
the plan outlines a blueprint for excellence, our detailed strategies and
timelines will be carefully developed over the next three months by our staff
and coaches.
The chief elements of
the 45-page plan include:
Six Strategic Goals. The plan identifies six strategic initiatives for
the Department of Athletics: 1) University and Community Partnership, 2) Academic
Excellence and Student-Athlete Well- Being, 3) Athletic Excellence, 4) Program Strength
and Integrity, 5) Enhance Resource Development and 6) Facilities and Event
Management.
Priority Needs Report. The plan articulates key areas of needed growth
with the Student-Academic Center, scholarships and endowments, and enhancement
of athletic facilities.
Special Statements. The plan includes the department's philosophies
on Institutional Control, Expectations of the Student-Athlete, Title IX, and
Professional Development.
"By setting priorities
and providing a clear focus for the future, UNCW Athletics will be able to give
our student-athletes the best possible environment for success. This plan is a
living document and one that we will use to work together to achieve the goals
that our department has collectively laid forth."
