Magill Joins Seahawk Athletic Staff

WILMINGTON, N.C. ? Veteran collegiate administrator and business professional Randy Magill has joined UNC Wilmington's staff as Associate Athletic Director for Business Affairs, Director of Athletics Kelly Mehrtens announced Saturday.

Magill, 45, has spent the last five years at Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C., where he began as Assistant Athletic Director in 2003 before being elevated to Associate Athletic Director two years ago. He has been involved in all phases of CU's athletic operations, including financial management, budgets and ticketing.

“Randy has the perfect mix of skills for this position and we're delighted to have him join our staff,” said Mehrtens. “It's extremely important to be good stewards of our financial resources, and we believe Randy has the background and skills to make that happen.”

The Columbus, Ohio, native has more than 10 years of experience in coaching, athletic administration and event management to go along with a proven business background. His financial management experience in athletics and the private sector make him a strong fit for the position.

“I'm very excited about the opportunity to contribute to the program and the university. I'm looking forward to working with everyone involved in the program,” said Magill.

At Campbell, Magill has been responsible for the school's $8 million athletic budget, including budgeting, tickets, team travel and summer camp programs. He has been involved in the hiring, training and supervision of staff members and the coordination of championship events.

In addition, Magill has worked with contract negotiations involving major vendors and completed many NCAA-required reports such as the annual Financial Audit, EADA Report, NCAA Self-Study and Annual SAACS Accreditation Report.

Magill began his career as a basketball coach at Ohio University-Chillicothe, the University of North Dakota and the University of South Alabama before entering the business ranks as a tax manager and forensic accountant in 1995.

He returned to collegiate athletics as the athletic director at Wesleyan College in Macon, Ga., in 2002 and also served concurrently as commissioner of the Great South Athletic Conference. Magill then spent one year as a private accounting consultant in Atlanta before accepting the position at Campbell.

He facilitated a roundtable on “Athletic Taxation” at the 2006 Collegiate Athletic Business Managers Association (CABMA) meeting and performed the same role during a “Camps and Clinics” session at the 2007 convention.

Magill is a member of CABMA and the National Association of Collegiate Athletic Directors (NACDA).

He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Ohio University and a Master of Science in Management from LaSalle University in Mandeville, La., and a Master of Sports Science Degree from the U.S. Sports Academy.
