Capaccio Promotes Three In Athletic Adm.

SEAHAWKS ANNOUNCE ATHLETIC PROMOTIONS

WILMINGTON, N.C.
UNC Wilmington Director of Athletics Mike Capaccio has announced the promotions of three members of the school's athletic administration.

Joe Browning has been elevated to Associate Athletic Director for Communications and Special Events, Joe Simon has been named Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations and Jim Mayew has been tabbed Assistant Athletic Director for Strength & Conditioning for the Seahawks.

"I'm very pleased to recognize these three individuals for their outstanding service to our department,"

said Capaccio. "They are part of a tremendous staff that ranks second to none in the country. With the continued efforts of our truly dedicated staff, UNCW athletics will achieve great things."

One of the department's most visible members, Browning begins his 20th year as UNCW's external communications specialist.

The Topeka, Kan., native joined the program in August of 1986 after five years as sports information director and director of athletic promotions at Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, W.Va.. Since arriving at UNCW, he has taken on an expanded role in the athletic department's operations.

In addition to overseeing the program's media relations efforts, internet site, publications, statistics, radio and television properties and digital photography services, Browning serves as the sports supervisor for men's and women's tennis and has taken the lead role in several special projects.

Browning has been very active in amateur athletics during his career. He assisted the U.S. Olympic Committee at three U.S. Olympic Festivals, the 1991 Pan American Games in Havana, Cuba, the 1993 Winter Olympic Games in Albertville, France, the 1993 World University Games in Buffalo, N.Y., and the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta.

Browning has received awards from the Virginia and Idaho Press Associations and the College Sports Information Directors of American for his work and served as the first president of the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association.

Browning earned his Bachelor's Degree in Mass Communications from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1978 and his Master's Degree in Mass Communications from Shippensburg University in 1984.

Simon begins his fifth year with the Seahawks and oversees the areas of facilities, event management, and all construction and renovation projects within the department.

Simon, 30, supervises the sports of cross country, track and field, men's golf and women's golf as well as the department's sports medicine component.

Simon previously served as travel coordinator and assistant ticket manager at Brown University. He was ticket manager and data base coordinator for the Seahawks from 1999-2000 before accepting the post at Brown.

A native of Boone, N.C., Simon began his collegiate administrative career as a customer service representative at Tennessee from 1997-99, while completing his graduate work. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in History from UNC Chapel Hill in 1997 and was awarded his Master's Degree in Sports Administration from Tennessee in 1999.

Mayew, meanwhile, begins his fourth year as UNCW's strength and conditioning professional and his eighth year with the program.

The Kenosha, Wisc., native works with all 19 varsity sports and has sponsored 10 NSCA Strength and Conditioning All-Americans since 2000. He played a key role in the design and construction of the school's state-of-the-art Seahawk Strength Center that opened in 2004.

Mayew has extensive experience in the weight room. He is a certified strength and conditioning specialist with the National Strength and Conditioning Association and was recognized as the Colonial Athletic Association's "Strength and Conditioning Professional of the Year" in 2000.

Mayew also serves as the sports supervisor for men's soccer, women's soccer and volleyball.

He earned his Bachelor's Degree in Marketing and Physical Education from UNCW in 2000 and 2002, respectively, and completed his Master's Degree in Business Administration from UNCW in 2005.
