Fall Sports Athlete-of-the-Week

Sam Leger

Senior Forward/Men's Soccer

Arvada, Colo.

Senior striker Sam Leger scored three goals last week as the men's soccer team pushed its record to 5-1 and jumped into the College Soccer News national rankings.

The Arvada, Colo., product collected the second goal in UNCW's 4-1 victory over East Carolina on Friday and then added a pair of tallies in a 6-3 rout of UNC Asheville on Sunday. The Seahawks are currently ranked No. 26 in this week's College Soccer News national poll.

Men's Soccer

Head Coach: Aidan Heaney (5th Season)

Team Record: Overall (5-1-0), CAA (0-0-0)

Next Match: Wednesday, Sept. 21, @ South Carolina, 7:00 p.m.

With a four-game winning streak under its belt, the men's soccer team travels to Columbia, S.C., Wednesday for a mid-week battle with South Carolina, a member of Conference USA for soccer.

The surging Seahawks boosted their record to 5-1 with a pair of relatively easy home victories over East Carolina and UNC Asheville over the weekend. UNCW broke open a close game with three second-half goals to bolt past the Pirates, 4-1, last Friday before routing the Bulldogs, 6-3, on Sunday.

In Friday's win over ECU, leading scorer Sam Leger (Faith Christian Academy/Arvada, Colo.) connected on a pair of headers to lift the Seahawks and hand the Pirates their fifth consecutive loss to open the 2005 campaign.

With the score knotted at 1-all at halftime, Leger struck early in the second period, taking a corner kick from Dustin Efird (South Rowan HS/China Grove, N.C.) less than three minutes into the period and notching his fourth goal of the season with a header from close range. The senior forward then pushed the score to 3-1 with another header, this one at 62:12, after taking a cross from Adam Currey (Horizon HS/Scottsdale, Ariz.).

Reserve Juho Karjalainen (Paimio, Finland) completed the scoring at 70:23 when the junior midfielder converted a penalty kick when Currey was taken down in the box on a breakaway.

Freshman striker Tim Masters (Charlotte Latin HS/Charlotte, N.C.) recorded UNCW's first goal just 1:27 into the match when the rookie from Charlotte faked ECU goalkeeper Chris Hicks with an attempted shot and slapped the ball into the net. ECU scored the equalizer at 42:55 when Zach Mathews fired three shots from close range at UNCW goalie Brad Knighton, with the third try getting past Knighton into the net.

UNCW outshot ECU, 15-9, but the Seahawk defense held the Pirates to just one shot after intermission.

In Sunday's romp over UNCA, senior forward Keith Shevlin (Athlone, Ireland) scored twice and was one of five different players to find the net in the 6-3 decision. It represented the most goals in a game for a Seahawk squad since the 1999 season.

The Seahawks built a 4-0 halftime lead and never looked back. Junior defender Russell Bienias (Millbrook HS/Raleigh, N.C.) opened the scoring just 1:23 into the match, heading home a corner kick by senior midfielder Will Clark (Myers Park HS/Charlotte, N.C.). A goal by senior midfielder Adam Currey then pushed the lead to 2-0 at the 5:04 mark.

Leger extended the lead to 3-0 at 19:35 with his sixth goal of the season, setting a new career-high. Shevlin made it 4-0 in the 31st minute after knocking home a loose ball and headed in his second goal of the match later in the second period to make it 5-0 Seahawks.

UNCW's final goal of the afternoon came at 63:14 as junior forward Ricky Henderson (Salesianum HS/Wilmington, Dela.) tucked a shot just inside the left post.

Eight different players have scored this season for UNCW, which has owns a 19-12 margin in goals over opponents. Leger leads the team in scoring with 12 points on a career-high six goals, followed by Shevlin and Masters with eight points apiece on three goals and two assists.

Junior Brad Knighton (Mills E. Godwin HS/Richmond, Va.) has played the lion's share of time in goal, collecting 22 saves with a 1.44 goals against average.

Following the matchup with the Gamecocks, the Seahawks return home to entertain regional rival Campbell on Saturday, Sept. 24, at 6 p.m.

Women's Soccer

Head Coach: Paul Cairney (10th Season)

Team Record: Overall (4-3-0), CAA (0-0-0)

Next Match: Friday, Sept. 23, Vs. St. Joseph's, 7:00 p.m.

The women's soccer team, which split a pair of in-state games last weekend, returns to the UNCW Soccer Stadium this week to play host to St. Joseph's and CAA newcomer Georgia State.

Coach Paul Cairney's team faces the Hawks in the final non-conference match of the season on Friday at 7 p.m. before making its CAA debut on Sunday with a 2 p.m. contest against the Panthers.

In action last weekend, Davidson handed UNCW a 1-0 shutout loss on Friday night before the Seahawks earned a 1-0 overtime win over Elon on Sunday.

A penalty kick by Davidson sophomore Kara Koehrn with 4:29 remaining was the decisive goal in Friday's non-conference defeat to the Wildcats. With time winding down, a foul was called in the box and Koehrn, a three-time All-Southern Conference selection, nailed the ensuing penalty kick into the lower left corner of the net past UNCW sophomore goalkeeper Christine York (Severna Park HS/Millersville, Md.) for the game-winner.

The Seahawks rebounded nicely Sunday when junior midfielder Liz Chriss (Mount Tabor HS/Winston-Salem, N.C.) took a cross from freshman forward Kelly Renkin (Clover Hill HS/Midlothian, Va.) and scored the game-winning goal 57 seconds into overtime to give UNC Wilmington a 1-0 road victory over Elon at Rodd Field.

With the exception of a penalty kick in the Davidson game, the Seahawk defense has not allowed a goal in the last 302:17 of play. The last time an opponent scored on UNCW was three games ago on Sept. 4 when UNC Charlotte connected in the 58th minute.

It was Chriss' fourth goal of the season, a team high, while Renkin's third assist ties her with sophomore forward Dalton Carruthers (Broughton HS/Raleigh, N.C.) for the team lead.

Senior goalkeeper Rachael Wilson (Southern Guilford HS/Greensboro, N.C.) played the entire 90:57, making two saves for her second shutout of the season.
