Mission of Student-Athlete Support Services

The Office of Student-Athlete Support Services within the Department of Athletics at the University of North Carolina Wilmington utilizes a holistic approach to developing our student-athletes.  We will support the academic pursuits of all student-athletes while providing opportunities that assist in developing active citizenship, personal growth and professional goals throughout their entire collegiate experience.  We are dedicated to upholding the University’s academic integrity standards and we embrace a diverse environment while creating future leaders.
 
Services 
  • Academic Advising: Assistance with executive functioning, semester course scheduling and major exploration or selection. 
  • Academic Awards: Facilitation of selected student-athlete nominations for academic honors and awards.
  • Academic Counseling: Holistic support for student-athletes, including guidance on managing daily stress, academic pressures, and life challenges. 
  • Academic Monitoring: Regular progress checks during all semesters through communication with professors via phone calls, emails, and grade reports. 
  • Community Service Coordination: Offering volunteer opportunities with local organizations to encourage civic engagement across the entire athletic department. 
  • Disability Services Coordination: Collaboration with Student Disability Services to ensure student-athletes receive necessary academic accommodations. 
  • Student-Athlete Development Programming: Targeted events and speaker series for student athletes designed to support personal growth, career development, college adjustment, and post-college preparation. 
  • NCAA Compliance: Oversight and support regarding NCAA academic policies, including satisfactory progress, progress toward degree, and NCAA eligibility requirements. 
  • Mentoring: One-on-one mentoring with Academic Coordinators or assigned peer mentors focusing on academic skills, accountability, and classroom success. 
  • Orientation: Comprehensive orientation programs for incoming freshmen and transfer student-athletes. 
  • Tutoring Services: Academic support available through the University Learning Center and the S.A.I.L program for targeted course content assistance. 
  • Weekly Academic Meetings: Scheduled weekly check-ins between Academic Coordinators and freshmen or transfer student-athletes covering key academic skills and support topics to ensure successful transition into UNCW. Â
