Volleyhawks Take Tourney Opener In Four

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Fueled by a double-double by Sam Vanda and a herculean effort at the net from Courtney Graham, UNCW rolled past Alabama State in four sets (25-12, 25-11, 22-25, 25-22) on Thursday in the I-85 Invitational at the G.B. Hodge Center.

The Seahawks, who earned their first win away from Hanover Hall since the 2024 season, improved to 3-2 while the Hornets dipped to 0-4 with the loss.

Vanda posted career-highs of 13 kills and 17 digs to pace the Seahawks in both categories, while Graham recorded eight kills and totaled nine blocks.

UNCW built a 2-0 lead through two sets before ASU forced a fourth set with a 25-22 win in set three. After seeing the Hornets draw even at 22-all in the fourth set, an ASU hitting error ignited a 3-0 match-ending run by the Seahawks that included kills from Lauren Lewis and Vanda.

For UNCW, Nadia Wasilewski and Elaina Murphy chipped in 11 and nine kills, respectively.
Led by Vanda and Graham with three aces apiece, the Seahawks held a 12-4 advantage in aces.

In her collegiate starting debut, Addi Vaughn doled out 38 assists and helped UNCW to a .275 hitting average.

Kaylen Hines held match-high honors with 19 kills for the Hornets. No other ASU player had more than five kills.

Next up for the Seahawks is a road test at Gardner-Webb in the middle match of the I-85 Invitational. UNCW and the Runnin' Bulldogs are set for a 10 a.m. first serve from Paul Porter Arena. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
