WILMINGTON, N.C. – The UNCW women's soccer team battled Monmouth to a 2-2 draw Thursday night at UNCW Soccer Stadium, with goals from
Kamrey Watkins and
Abbey Pierson.
"It was a really competitive match tonight with two good teams going at each other", said head coach
Chris Neal. "I'm happy with the chances we created and very proud of the team for the approach, effort, and performance."
The Seahawks (6-0-5, 1-0-1) struck first in the ninth minute when Watkins headed in a cross from
Ava Chuderewicz to give UNCW an early 1-0 lead. This is the second game in a row that Watkins has scored.
The Seahawks' defensive unit of Chuderewicz,
Rachel Fry,
Macy Lutz and
Alyssa Chuderewicz held Monmouth (5-2-3, 0-1-1) to one shot in the first half.
Monmouth answered early in the second half, finding the back of the net in the 48th minute to even the score. UNCW quickly responded, with Pierson scoring off an assist from
Caigan Leonard to put the Seahawks back in front.
The Hawks responded again in the 66th minute, scoring the equalizer and closing out the scoring for both sides.
UNCW returns to action Sunday, Sept. 27, against Northeastern at UNCW Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m., and the match will air on FloCollege.
