HAMPTON, Va. – The UNCW women's soccer team made a statement in its CAA opener Sunday, cruising to a 6-0 victory over Hampton behind goals from five different Seahawks to remain unbeaten on the season.
"That was a great start on the road in CAA play", said head coach
Chris Neal. "I'm very happy with the professionalism and focus that our team approached the game with. Hampton is a very dangerous team and has some dynamic attacking weapons. Fortunately, we were able to limit Hampton's chances and finish our own."
The Seahawks (6-0-4, 1-0 CAA) came out firing, generating nine shots in the opening half while the defensive unit of
Alyssa Chuderewicz,
Rachel Fry,
Ava Chuderewicz and
Macy Lutz held Hampton (1-6-1, 0-1 CAA) to just one shot in the first half and six in the whole match.
Lutz opened the scoring in the 30th minute, finding the back of the net with a right-footed shot from inside the box following a corner kick with an assist from both Ava and
Alyssa Chuderewicz. This is the first time in their collegiate careers that both Chuderewiczs got an assist on the same goal.
Viktoria Hankova doubled the advantage in the 43rd minute, sending the Seahawks into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
UNCW continued to pour on the pressure in the second half, scoring four unanswered goals.
Ava Vaughan extended the lead in the 63rd minute before
Elise Larimer recorded her first collegiate goal just three minutes later to make it 4-0.
Meg Umemoto then took over, scoring twice in 11 minutes. Her first goal came in the 69th minute from near midfield before she found the back of the net again in the 80th minute to cap the six-goal outburst.
Jada Tuffin also recorded her second multi-assist performance of the season, matching her two-assist effort against Old Dominion earlier this season.
The six-goal performance marked the 13th time UNCW has scored at least four goals under head coach
Chris Neal and the first time the Seahawks have scored six or more goals since Sept. 14, 2023. That performance also came against Hampton, when UNCW earned a 7-0 victory.
The Seahawks return home Thursday, Sept. 24, to host Monmouth at UNCW Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., and the match will air on FloCollege.
