Winthrop Takes Down UNCW In Sweep

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Buoyed by a season-high .316 hitting average, Winthrop slugged its way to a sweep (25-13, 26-24, 25-21) of UNCW on Friday in women's volleyball action at the Winthrop Coliseum.

The Eagles snapped a three-match losing skid with the win and climbed to 3-5. The Seahawks, meanwhile, saw their own streak extended to three consecutive losses and dipped to 4-7.

Led by KeAra Bowen's match-high 15 kills, the Eagles recorded 53 kills in the match. Paige Bennett added 13 kills.

UNCW's Gaby Zovko and Meredith Keefer both had seven kills. Zovko posted 21 assists and finished with seven digs.
Winthrop committed just one hitting error in the opening set on its way to a 25-13 win.

UNCW led 22-19 in the second set, but the Eagles scored seven of the next nine points to rally for the win.

In the final set, a kill from Elaina Murphy narrowed UNCW's deficit to 24-21, but WU claimed match point on a block.

The Seahawks return to the court on Saturday with a noon start against North Carolina Central at the Winthrop Coliseum.
