Butler, Sullivan Lift Volleyball Over Bulldogs

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Macon Butler and Lilly Sullivan powered the Seahawks to wins in the fourth and fifth sets to lift UNCW to a 3-2 win over visiting Citadel on Saturday at the Hampton Inn and Suites Seahawk Classic at Hanover Hall.

The Seahawks improved to 2-1 with the five-set victory while the Bulldogs dipped to 1-2 with the road loss.

Butler, who made her collegiate debut, came off the bench in the final two sets to score five points, including four on a pair of kills and blocks, in the decisive fifth set. Sullivan, meanwhile, powered the Seahawks in the fourth set with four kills and added two more in the fifth.

Trailing 2-1, UNCW forced a fifth set with a 25-22 win in set four.

UNCW never trailed in the fifth set, racing out to a 6-1 lead after a block by Gaby Zovko and Lauren Lewis.

Nadia Wasilewski forged a new career-high for the second straight match with 11 kills for the Seahawks and was joined in double-digit kills by Elaina Murphy and Lewis, each with 10.

Zovko collected seven kills and seven digs while doling out a season-high 37 assists.

Rachel Reininger of the Citadel led all hitters on the day with 20 kills while Luci Lipplegoos chipped in 10.

The Seahawks visit 19th-ranked North Carolina on Sunday for a 4 p.m. start.
