Ruh Tosses 1-Hitter In 5-0 Victory In CAA Opener

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW's Mason Ruh tossed a one-hit shutout on Wednesday against third-seeded Monmouth as the Seahawks opened their Coastal Athletic Association tournament run with a 5-0 win at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks snapped a five-game skid with the win and improved to 29-26, while the Hawks dropped to 29-22.

Ruh (5-1) posted UNCW's first complete game, one-hitter since Nick Monroe in 2014 against Liberty. The graduate student allowed a leadoff single to Brendan Buecker in the second and proceeded to retire 24 of the next 25 to close out the game. He walked one and struck out a season-high eight.

UNCW jumped on Monmouth starter Ryan Mealy (5-5) for two runs in the top of the first, both scoring on a two-out single by Mason Hughes.

Casey Carpenter doubled the lead in the fifth with a two-run homer to left.

JP Pennella and John Newton both finished with two hits for the Seahawks.

The Seahawks recorded a season-high 16 assists on the afternoon, with just five outs coming on fly balls.

The shutout was UNCW's seventh of the season and moved it into second nationally.

The Seahawks return to action on Thursday when they take on top-seed Campbell at 3 p.m.
