Lucas, Williford Lead UNCW Past CofC, 7-5

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Trevor Lucas drove in four runs on three hits, including a home run, and Trey Williford struck out a career-high 11 as UNCW topped the College of Charleston, 7-5, to even its Coastal Athletic Association series on Saturday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks pushed their conference record to 14-9 and overall improved to 26-19. The Cougars saw their records dip to 11-12 in the league and 21-24 overall.

UNCW plated two in the first on RBI hits by Lucas, a double, and John NewtonRyker Galaska pushed it to 3-0 with a sac fly in the third.

Lucas powered a four-run sixth inning with a three-run homer to left center, his eighth of the season.

Williford (6-1) earned the win, allowing three runs, one earned, on four hits and three walks over 6.2 innings.

JP Pennella, Newton and Jake Bechtel all finished with two hits for the Seahawks.

Clay Masonis notched his fifth save of the season, striking out two in one inning of work.

Dylan Johnson had two hits for CofC and Ethan Pyler added two hits, including his third homer of the season, coming in the eighth inning.

Starter Kurt Rogers (3-3) took the loss. He surrendered three runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out two in five innings.

The win was UNCW's 1,900th win over its 70 seasons of baseball.

The series wraps up on Sunday with a 2 p.m. start.
