UNCW Outslugged By Campbell, 16-12

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Joey Morton belted four of Campbell's six home runs on the night as the Camels outscored UNCW, 16-12, to win the Coastal Athletic Association series opener on Thursday at Brooks Field.

The Camels raised their record to 37-15 and 24-4 in the CAA. The Seahawks moved to 28-24, including 16-12 in the league, and dropped into a tie for second with the College of Charleston.

UNCW erased a 7-0 deficit after one inning of play, scoring six runs in the bottom of the second, and jumped in front on a two-run homer by Danny O'Brien. That lead was short-lived as Morton belted a solo shot with two outs to tie the game in the fourth.

Morton's third homer of the evening was a grand slam, again with two outs, in the fifth for a 12-8 lead.

UNCW managed to narrow the deficit to two runs twice in the final four innings, but Campbell fended off the Seahawks with two runs in the eighth and ninth innings.

Morton finished 4-for-4 and drove in eight runs while Andrew Keller and Jett Music both homered.

Jake Bechtel collected three hits, including a grand slam for the Seahawks, and knocked in four runs. Trevor Lucas, who collected four runs batted in, belted his team-leading 12th round tripper of the season to join Bechtel and O'Brien (2-for-4) with longballs.

Music (3-1) was credited with the win, and Carlos Lugo cleaned up for his first save of the season.

UNCW reliever Mason Ruh (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season.

The series continues with a 6 p.m. start on Saturday. Before the game, the Seahawks will honor and recognize their seniors and graduating players.
