Baseball Rallied In Ninth To Upend #9 Coastal

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW rallied with two runs in the bottom of the ninth to stun ninth-ranked Coastal Carolina for a 2-1 win on Tuesday in non-conference baseball action at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks (22-18) picked up their first win against a ranked opponent this season, while the Chants (28-12) dropped their second straight outing.

Down 1-0 in the bottom of the ninth, JP Pennella and Trevor Lucas opened the inning with hits, and Mason Hughesfollowed with the third, a single to left to score Pennella to tie the score. Howie Rickett followed with a bunt single to load the bases. Will Tyrell chopped a ball to first base one batter later, and the throw home came up short, allowing Lucas to score the winning run.

Pennellla collected a game-high three hits, and Lucas added two of his own.

Jordan Taylor had CCU's lone hit of the night, a solo homer in the second inning. It was his fourth of the season.

Mason Ruh, TJ Ziermann, Alex Sobol, and Brady Thompson combined on the one-hitter. It was UNCW's second combined one-hitter of the season.

Thompson, who was making his second collegiate pitching appearance, was credited with the win to move to 1-0. Thompson retired all three batters he faced in the top of the ninth.

Darin Horn (5-1) was saddled with the loss; it was his first setback of the season.

Overshadowed in the loss for Coastal was Jackson Smallett's start. The righthander tossed 6.1 innings of shutout baseball, allowed three, and struck out five.

UNCW visits Elon on Friday for the first game of a key Coastal Athletic Association South Division series. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
