Baseball Drops Finale, Series To Hofstra

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Hofstra's CJ Griggs belted a two-run homer in the top of the ninth to cap a three-run rally as the Pride topped UNCW, 6-5, to win the Coastal Athletic Association series on Sunday at Brooks Field.

The Pride, which scored all three runs in the ninth with two outs, improved to 13-20 and 8-10 in the CAA. The Seahawks, meanwhile, dropped their third straight conference series to slide to 21-18 overall and 10-8 in the league.

In the ninth, pinch-hitter Nick Gallello doubled to start the comeback. Michael Brown, who finished with two hits, followed with a double of his own to tie the game at 4-all. Griggs followed with his fourth homer of the season, a two-run shot to left-center for a 6-4 lead.

The Seahawks plated a run in their half of the ninth and had the tying run at third with one out. HU reliever Tanner Sanderhoff (3-3), however, escaped the jam with a strikeout and a routine ground ball to third to end the threat and game.

UNCW's Howie Rickett collected a career and game-high four hits, including a pair of doubles.

Clay Masonis (0-3) took the loss, allowing all three runs in his only inning out of the bullpen.

Runs were at a premium as both teams struggled on the day, combining to go 5-for-30 with runners in scoring position.

The Seahawks host nationally-ranked Coastal Carolina on Apr. 21 at 6 p.m.
