Baseball Takes Series Opener In Buies Creek, 5-3

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – UNCW freshman reliever Clay Masonis entered the game with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth inning and closed out a 5-3 win over Campbell with a pop-up and a strikeout on Friday at Jim Perry Stadium.

The Seahawks raised their record to 20-13 overall and 9-4 in the league, while the Camels, who carried a nine-game conference winning streak into the series, dipped to 21-12 and 14-2.

Masonis, who notched his third save, entered the game for Trey Williford with the bases loaded and got Carlos Lugo, who finished with three hits, to pop up to third on the first pitch. He then got Mike Murphy to strike out, ending the game.

Trevor Lucas knocked in three runs on two hits, while JP PennellaMason Hughes, and Howie Rickett all had a pair of hits.

Campbell built a 3-0 lead through four innings against Seahawk starter Connor Marshburn, but the Seahawks pushed across four in the top of the fifth to take the lead. Lucas' 2-run double powered the rally.

Williford (4-1) was credited with the win. The freshman lefthander struck out a career-high nine and allowed just four base runners over his four innings of work.

Lugo was the only Camel with a multi-hit night as Campbell was limited to five singles.

Reliever Connor Helmsley (2-1) took the loss, allowing two runs on five hits in four innings out of the bullpen.

The series continues Saturday at 3 p.m.
