Diamond Hawks Sweep Dolphins

UNCW posts first non-conference raod sweep since 2020 against Kentucky

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – UNCW finished off a non-conference road series sweep of Jacksonville with a 7-2 rain-shortened victory on Sunday at Sessions Park.

The Seahawks improved to 10-6 with the win while the Dolphins, who have lost their last six, fell to 9-7. The last non-conference sweep for UNCW was at Kentucky in 2020.

In the Seahawks' fourth inning, homers off the bats of Trevor Lucas and Cole Nelson highlighted the five-run frame. Lucas belted a solo shot, his third of the season, to open the scoring. Nelson followed three batters later with a towering homer to left with a man on for a 3-0 lead. Josh Martinez lined a RBI double into the left center field gap, and JP Pennella plated Martinez with a single, one batter later.

Starter Bromley Thornton (2-1) went the distance, allowing two runs, on five hits and a pair of walks. He struck out four.
Pennella and Nelson both had two hits in the game. Nelson knocked in three runs.

Brendan Holland (1-3) was saddled with the loss for the Dolphins. The lefthander surrendered five runs on seven hits. He walked one and fanned four in 3.2 innings.

The Seahawks return to Brooks Field on Mar. 10, with a 6 p.m. start against Charleston Southern.
