5-Run Outburst Lifts UNCW To Series Win

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – UNCW struck for five runs in the top of the sixth inning to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 7-3 lead on Saturday as UNCW clinched its series at Jacksonville with a 9-4 win at Sessions Stadium.

The Seahawks rose to 9-6 with the win, while the Dolphins saw their losing skid go to five and dropped to 9-6.

UNCW sent nine batters to the plate in the sixth-inning outburst, and Will Tyrrell highlighted the frame with a two-run double. JP Pennella, who finished with a team-high three hits, knocked in the final run with a double to left.

Reliever Trey Williford (2-0) was the beneficiary of the big inning to earn the win. The lefthander struck out four over 3.1 shutout innings.

Both Kevin Jones and Jake Bechtel homered in the first inning as UCW grabbed a 2-0 lead before JU came to bat.

After tying the game in the bottom of the second, Roger Vergara's sac fly plated the go-ahead run in the bottom of the third. Vergara led JU with three hits.

Sam Grunberg homered for the Dolphins.

JU starter Payton Waters was tagged with the loss to move to 0-2.

The series concludes on Sunday with the Seahawks looking to record their first sweep of the season. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
