Softball Rallies for 4-3 Win vs. Toledo

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – A trio of RBI doubles off the bats of Emily WhitwellSierra Persinger and Cassidy Relay keyed a 4-3 comeback win by the UNCW softball team over Toledo to open the weekend tournament at Boseman Field on Friday night.

The Seahawks upped their record to 10-9 with a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings to erase a 3-0 Rockets (1-18) lead.

Whitwell extended her hitting streak to seven games with a two-out double on the first pitch of the at-bat to left field that scored Relay, who singled in the previous at-bat, in the bottom of the third. One batter later, Persinger ripped a double down the left field line to score Whitwell and push the deficit to 3-2.

UNCW tied the game with two outs one inning later on a Grace Hennessy single to score Peyton Carver from second base. Relay then doubled home Ava Brookshire, who reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning.

Toledo jumped out to a three-run lead in the third that was highlighted by a Jenna Bloomfield two-run double that followed an Audrey Miller RBI single.

Freshman Camille Hamilton (4-2) entered in relief of starter Taylor Barlow following the third inning and tossed four scoreless innings.

Reliever Mady Yackee (0-5) was tagged with the loss.

The Seahawks, who won their sixth straight home game, continue the weekend with two games against UNC Greensboro and Army beginning at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
