Ninth Inning Rally Halted As UNCW Falls In Finale

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW's rally in the ninth inning came up short as William & Mary averted a series sweep on Sunday with a 9-8 win over the Seahawks in Coastal Athletic Association baseball action at Brooks Field.

The Tribe improved to 12-14 on the season and 4-5 in the league. The Seahawks, who won their third conference series of the season, moved to 18-9 and 7-2.

William & Mary plated nine runs over the final four innings to erase a 4-0 deficit. The Seahawks scored four in the bottom of the ninth but left the tying and winning runs in scoring position.

Tribe reliever Tom Bourgue (2-1) earned the win. The lefthander struck out five over 3.1 innings of relief. Jack Weight recorded the final two outs for his first save of the season.

Aiden Evans collected three hits to lead the Seahawks, and Howie Rickett added a pair of hits.

Trey Christman and Witt Scafidi had three hits apiece for W&M. Christman belted his fifth homer of the season, and Anthony Greco hit his second of the weekend and third of the season.

Trey Williford (2-1) was tagged with the loss for UNCW.

Starter Bromley Thornton struck out a career-high nine and allowed two runs over five innings for UNCW.

The Seahawks open a nine-game road swing on Mar. 31 at 6 p.m. at East Carolina.
