Relay, Whitwell Key Series-Opening Win

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW freshman Emily Whitwell's two-out, go-ahead single up the middle keyed a 5-2 win in Friday night's Coastal Athletic Association softball series opener vs. Charleston at Boseman Field.

The Seahawks upped their record to 17-13 and 5-2 in the league. The Cougars dropped to 16-19 overall and 7-3 in the CAA.

Whitwell and leadoff hitter Cassidy Relay combined for six of UNCW's seven hits, with Relay reaching base four times with a walk and RBI.

Freshman right-hander Camille Hamilton (7-3) retired the first nine batters on 26 pitches after fellow first-year Ava Brookshire put the Seahawks on the board with a sacrifice-fly in the bottom of the first.

Charleston went ahead in the top of the fourth with two runs capped by a Halle Cannon RBI double before Relay and Whitwell flipped the advantage with three runs in the bottom-half.

The duo also added an insurance run in the sixth on the basepaths with an error leading to another score to support sophomore Lynsie Herman's three-inning save.

The series resumes on Saturday at 4 p.m.
