Five-Run Seventh Propels UNCW In Series Opener

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW plated five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to erase a three-run deficit for a 5-3 win over visiting William & Mary on Friday at Brooks Field.

UNCW pushed its conference record to 6-1 with the home win and 17-8 overall on the season. The Tribe, meanwhile, saw its four-game winning streak halted and fell back to 11-13 and 3-4.

In the seventh, UNCW sent 11 hitters to the plate in the outburst. JP Pennella knotted the score at 3-all with an RBI infield single. Kevin Jones and Mason Hughes followed with back-to-back, bases-loaded walks to force in the go-ahead and fifth runs, respectively.

Pennella finished with two hits and stole his 10th base of the season.

Connor Marshburn (3-2) earned the win, allowing three runs, two earned, over seven innings, a career high. He walked one and struck out five.

Clay Masonis collected his second save by going the final two innings.

W&M starter Zach Boyd didn't figure in the decision despite four innings of shutout baseball.

Jamie Laskofski had two hits, including a solo homer to lead off the W&M third inning. Charlie Iriotakis and Chase Ecker both added two hits.

Reliever Daniel Lingle (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs in 0.2 innings.

The series continues Saturday with a 4 p.m. start.
