UNCW Storms Past VCU For Road Win

RICHMOND, Va. – UNCW men's tennis program earned a quality road win on Sunday at the Thalhimer Tennis Center over VCU, taking a 5-2 decision over the Rams.

The Seahawks upped their record to 6-8 with the road win, while the Rams slipped to 5-10.

The Seahawks clinched the non-conference tilt behind Tomas Marin's 7-5, 7-5 win at fifth singles. The win improved his record to 4-2 at the slot.

Alex de Gabriele and Brady Hussey earned the doubles point, clinching it with a 6-2 win at the number one position. Jordi Domenech and Marin teamed at the third doubles for a 6-3 victory.

After seeing VCU draw even with a win at number six singles, the two teams would trade points with UNCW's Lukas Steffen taking a three-set win at number one singles. In winning, he raised his record to 8-2 this season at the top spot in the lineup.

Tied at two-all, de Gabriele gutted out a three-set win at number tw singles, overcoming a loss in the first set to take sets two and three by the score of 6-4, both times.

Marin then stepped up for the clinching point, and Oscar Baumgartner added another three-set victory in number four singles.

UNCW opens a four-match homestand on Mar. 26 at 2 p.m. against Drexel.
