Baseball Falls Short In Sweep Attempt

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston built a 5-0 lead after four innings and never looked back on Sunday in a 6-3 win over UNCW at Patriots Point.

The Cougars avoided a sweep at the hands of UNCW and moved to 10-13 on the season and 5-4 in the conference. The Seahawks, meanwhile, fell to 16-8 and 5-1 in the league.

Dylan Johnson, who also homered later in the game, opened the scoring in the first with a two-run double, and Jackson Berini did the same with a two RBI double in the fourth to establish a 4-0 lead.

Jacob Amman added two hits, including a solo homer, for the Cougars.

Mason Hughes elevated his batting average to .439 this season with a three-hit afternoon. The sophomore knocked in two runs with his second home run of the season, coming in the eighth inning.

Bromley Thornton (3-2) took the loss after allowing four runs on four hits and three walks in two innings of work.

Kayden Myers (3-1) earned the win in relief for CofC. He allowed a run over 3.1 innings. Kurt Rogers recorded the save, his second, by striking out three of the four batters he faced.

The Seahawks continue conference play on Mar. 27 against William & Mary at 6 p.m.
