Seahawks Take Control Late To Clinch Series

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Freshman Trey Williford struck out five over the final 3.1 innings as UNCW plated eight runs over the final four innings to clinch its conference series on Saturday with an 8-1 win over the College of Charleston at Patriots Point.

The Seahawks remained perfect in league play at 5-0 and improved to 16-7 overall. The Cougars, meanwhile, fell to 4-4 in the conference and 9-13 on the season.

The game was scoreless through four innings before Kevin Jones opened the scoring with an RBI single in the fifth, and Mason Hughes followed with a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.

Cooper Allen (4-0) picked up the win with five strong innings. He surrendered the lone CofC run on a home run off the bat of Landon Penfield in the fifth inning. Williford nailed down his first save by closing out the game.

Aiden Evan collected a game-high three hits while Josh Martinez had a pair of hits, including a two-run single in the sixth inning to give a 4-1 lead.

Jake Bechtel and Trevor Lucas both homered in the Seahawks' seventh inning. They remained tied for the team lead with five.

CofC starter Jace Stancil (0-4) took the loss, allowing a pair of runs over five innings.

Alex LaCoste and Will Tippett both had doubles for the Cougars.

UNCW looks to complete a sweep of the series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. start.
