Pitching Shines As UNCW Takes Series Opener

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – UNCW starter Connor Marshburn delivered six shutout innings as UNCW clipped the College of Charleston, 2-1, on Friday in the opening game of a conference series at Patriots Point.

The Seahawks improved to 4-0 in the league and 15-7 overall. The Cougars, meanwhile, dipped to 4-3 in conference play and 9-12 on the season.

Marshburn (2-2) picked up the win by scattering two hits and walking one over his six innings. He struck out seven before making way for the Seahawks' bullpen. Francesco Capocci tossed a shutout seventh inning, and Clay Masonis notched his first career save, pitching the final two frames.

Kevin Jones and Mason Hughes had two hits apiece, but Will Tyrrell had the game's only hit with a runner in scoring position. His two-out double in the third provided all the scoring UNCW would get.

CofC's Carter Harrington was the hard-luck loser to slide to 1-2. Harrington allowed two runs on six hits and walked two, while striking out six in his seven innings of work.

Dylan Johnson knocked in CofC's lone run of the game with a ground ball out to score Reese Holbrook in the eighth.

The series continues with a 2 p.m. start on Saturday.
