Thornton One-Hits Elon As UNCW Sweep

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW's Bromley Thornton tossed a seven-inning one-hitter as the Seahawks topped Elon, 11-0, to complete a Coastal Athletic Association series sweep on Sunday at Brooks Field.

UNCW's winning streak moved to seven with the win. The Seahawks are now 14-6 overall and 3-0 in the league. The Phoenix, meanwhile, dipped to 9-10 and 2-4.

For Thornton (3-1), it was his second straight complete game following a rain-shortened five-inning effort at Jacksonville on Mar. 8. The junior righthander allowed just a second inning single to Jose Mariano. He walked one and struck out four.

The Seahawks scored three in the bottom of the first for a 3-0 lead. Mason Hughes knocked in the opening run with a double and Jake Bechtel followed with a sac fly. Cole Nelson doubled in the third run later in the frame.

Kevin Jones and Hughes finished with two hits and two RBIs apiece while Bechtel knocked in four runs. He connected on his fourth homer of the season in the third inning.

Elon starter Cole Hansen was tagged with the loss after surrendering three runs in his only inning.

The Seahawk pitching staff closed out the series with 26 consecutive shutout innings and scattered 12 hits over that span.

The Seahawks host nationally-ranked NC State on Mar. 17 at 6 p.m.
