Six-Run Second Inning Leads to Saturday Win

GREENSBORO, North Carolina – Freshman Becca Merrick's two-run single highlighted a six-run second inning to push the UNCW softball team past North Carolina A&T, 10-2, in five innings on Saturday afternoon at the Lady Aggies Softball Complex.

The Seahawks won their third straight game to move to 14-10 and 2-0 in the Coastal Athletic Association. The Aggies dipped to 13-17 and 0-5 in the circuit.

UNCW, who went up 1-0 in the first inning on a throwing error, sent 11 batters to the plate in a big second inning that included back-to-back RBI doubles by freshman Ava Brookshire and junior Allison Corbin before N.C. A&T recorded an out.

After junior Cassidy Relay and freshman Emily Whitwell reached on a pair of errors, Merrick sliced a single through the right side on a 2-1 count to score both and put the Seahawks ahead 6-0.

Junior Madison Biddle, who began the frame with a bunt single, drove in the sixth run of the second on a fielder's choice bunt to score Merrick after sophomore Sierra Persinger reached on a third error.

The Seahawks erased a two-run home run by the Aggies' Jaden James in the top of the third when Corbin and senior Grace Hennessy reached on singles and scored on a throwing error. Biddle crossed home an inning later on a wild pitch to make it 10-2.

UNCW junior Makayla Huddleston (3-6) struck out four in three innings of work and junior Taylor Barlow worked two scoreless relief innings.

N.C. A&T's Aaliyah Williams (5-5) was tagged for seven runs, three earned, across 2.1 innings.

The Seahawks will aim for a sweep of the Aggies on Sunday at 1 p.m.
