Baseball Wins Marathon In Walk-Off Fashion

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Micah Simpson's bases-loaded walk forced in the winning run as UNCW walked off Elon in a 16-inning marathon at Brooks Field in the opening game of a Coastal Athletic Association series.

The Seahawks pushed their winning streak to five and their records to 12-6 overall and 1-0 in the league. Elon saw its three-game winning streak halted while dipping to 9-8 and 2-2.

In the 16th, Kevin Jones singled to lead off and moved over to second base on a bunt hit by Jake Bechtel. Mason Hughes drew a walk to load the bases and two batters later, Simpson walked on a 3-1 offering to force in the winning run.

Reliever Francesco Capocci (1-1) was credited with the win, striking out a career-high seven in a career-long four-inning appearance.
Kehler Hamilton (0-1) was tagged with the loss despite striking out four over 3.1 innings of work.

Jones, Bechtel and Trevor Lucas each had three hits for the Seahawks.

Brian DuRoff and Henry Akopov had two apiece for the Phoenix, who held a 7-2 lead after six innings.

The Seahawks plated three runs in the seventh and single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to draw even. The tying scored on an RBI single through the leftside by Jones.

Clay Masonis and Capocci combined to strike out 13 of the final 24 Elon hitters.

The UNCW staff combined for a program-record 27 strikeouts, coming up short of the NCAA record of 31, set by NC State versus Akron in an 18-inning affair on Mar. 4, 2009.

The game time of 5:36 was also a program record for a non-rain delayed contest, topping a 5:09, 16-inning game against North Carolina A&T on Mar. 29, 2025.

The series resumes Saturday with a 4 p.m. start.
