Allen Pitches UNCW To Series Win Over Elon

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Junior Cooper Allen tossed seven shutout innings as UNCW earned a series win over Coastal Athletic Association rival Elon on Saturday with an 8-0 win at Brooks Field.

With their winning streak at six, UNCW improved to 13-6 overall and 2-0 in the league. Elon, though, slumped to 9-9 and 2-3. The series concludes on Sunday with a 10 a.m. start due to expected inclement weather later in the day.

Allen scattered seven hits, walked none, and struck out five in improving to 3-0 this season. The righthander lowered his earned run average to 1.20 with the strong outing. Trey Williford completed the staff's fourth shutout of the season with two innings of relief.

UNCW got on the board in the first on Trevor Lucas' fourth home run of the season and added three more in the third for a 4-0 lead. Mason Hughes doubled in a run, and Lucas added an RBI single in the inning.

Lucas and Hughes were joined by JP Pennella with two-hit games. All three knocked in two runs while Pennella stole two bases and scored twice.

Aidan Stieglitz (3-1) absorbed his first loss of the season after surrendering four runs in 2.2 innings.

Gavin Bogdanchik had two hits for the Phoenix, who stranded eight runners on base.
