UNCW Explodes In The Eighth To Win Series

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Highlighted by run-scoring hits by Josh Martinez, JP Pennella and Jackson Hood, UNCW struck for six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally past UConn, 7-2, to win the weekend series on Sunday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks climbed to 7-5 on the season while the Huskies moved to 4-7.

UNCW sent 11 batters to the plate in the eighth, taking advantage of four walks issued by the Huskies. The tying run came across on a wild pitch, and the go-ahead run scored on a bases-loaded walk. Martinez followed with a two-run single, and Pennella plated another run with a single. Hood closed out the scoring with a single to right to make it 7-2.

Freshman reliever Trey Williford (1-0) was the winning pitcher while Sean Finn (0-1) was tagged with the loss. Williford struck out four in three innings out of the bullpen.

Pennella finished with three hits and Trevor Lucas added two for the Seahawks. Will Tyrrell belted his first collegiate homer in the fourth inning to give UNCW a 1-0 lead.

Chris Polemeni also had three hits for UConn, while Nater Wachter had two hits, including his second homer of the season. It was a two-run shot that gave the Huskies a 2-1 lead in the sixth.

Neither starter figured in the decision, but each fashioned strong outings. UConn's Oliver Pudvar struck out seven over five innings and Bromley Thornton fanned a career-high eight in six innings.

The Seahawks host longtime rival East Carolina on Mar. 4 at 6 p.m.
