Ninth-Inning Rally Falls Short

WILMINGTON, N.C. – East Carolina held off a ninth-inning UNCW rally to edge the Seahawks, 5-3, in college baseball action on Wednesday at Brooks Field.

The Pirates posted their third straight win over the Seahawks and improved to 7-5-1 while the Seahawks fell to 7-6 with the home loss.

ECU built a 5-1 lead through eight innings, but the Seahawks scored twice in the ninth and had the tying run at the plate. The first run of the ninth came across on a bases-loaded double play, and Cole Nelson followed with an RBI single to narrow the deficit to 5-3.

JP Pennella had two hits on the night for the Seahawks and drove in a run with an RBI single in the sixth inning.

Four Pirates finished with two-hit games, including Grady Lenahan, who knocked in two runs. Braden Burress also had two hits and scored twice.

Joseph Webb (1-2) earned the win with four innings of one-run relief.

UNCW starter Alex Sobol took the loss to slide to 0-1.

The Seahawks open a three-game series at Jacksonville on Mar. 6 with a 6 p.m. start.
