Freshmen Lead UNCW In Loss To App State

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Freshmen Emily Whitwell and Becca Merrick combined for five hits and four runs batted in for UNCW, but Appalachian State was able to ride a pair of big innings to a 15-9 win on Sunday in softball action at Boseman Field.

App State closed out the weekend with a 4-0 mark while the Seahawks finished 1-3.

ASU plated a pair of runs in the top of the first and then posted six runs in both the third and fourth innings for a 14-1 lead. UNCW, however, scored three in the fourth and then cut its deficit to five, 14-9, with a five-run fifth.

Julia Girk collected three hits and knocked in two runs to highlight the ASU lineup. Emilie Ching and Makayla McClain both belted home runs. Ching's was a solo shot in the third and McClain's was a two-run shot, also coming in the six-run third.

Whitwell had three hits and a pair of runs batted in for the Seahawks. Cassidy Relay and Merrick both had two hits and scored twice. Merrick, who doubled and tripled, added two RBI's.

Camryn Fischer (2-0) earned the win for the Mountaineers and Peyton Eckert (0-1) was tagged with the loss for UNCW.

The return to the diamond against St. Bonaventure on Feb. 13 in the opening game of the Wofford Invitational in Spartanburg, S.C. First pitch is set for 10 a.m. The Seahawks will also play Wofford at 3 p.m. the same day.
