Whitwell Shines as Softball Splits Friday Opener

SPARTANBURG, South Carolina – UNCW softball freshman Emily Whitwell collected five hits and scored two runs over two games as the Seahawks split a pair of contests against St. Bonaventure and host Wofford at the Wofford Invitational on Friday at Hope Field.

Whitwell tallied three hits in the weekend-opening 3-1 win vs. the Bonnies (0-6) and then added another two hits in the afternoon capper against the Terriers (5-1).

The Seahawks (2-4) struck first in the third innings of both games, but SBU evened the score in the bottom half of the first game with an Eleanor Park home run while Wofford's go-ahead four-run third featured RBI doubles off the bats of Brianna Stanley and Kalli Petty.

Freshman Ava Brookshire put the Seahawks ahead against the Bonnies in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run single, scoring both Whitwell and senior Cassidy Relay.

UNCW's Taylor Barlow (1-0) tossed five innings of one-run ball with six strikeouts while freshman Camille Hamilton (S, 2) picked up her second career save with five strikeouts in two innings. Hamilton also tossed three scoreless innings against Wofford in the second game.

SBU's Mackenzie Frani (0-3) also threw five innings of three-run ball.

Terriers starter Abby Greenwood (3-0) fanned seven in a complete-game effort in which she allowed no earned runs while Seahawk right-hander Makayla Huddleston (0-3) was tagged with the loss.

The weekend resumes on Saturday with two games between UMBC (10 a.m.) and St. Bonaventure (12:30 p.m.)
