UNCW Opens Season with Two-Game Split

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW softball team opened the 2026 campaign with a Friday night split against Appalachian State and George Washington at Boseman Field.

The Seahawks (1-1) dropped a narrow 4-3 decision to the Mountaineers (2-0) before powering past the Revolutionaries (1-1) by a 9-2 score in the season-opening nightcap.

Junior center fielder Cassidy Relay's four hits over the two games keyed six different Seahawks to collect multiple hits on Friday, including freshmen Ava Brookshire, Becca Merrick and Emily Whitwell.

Brookshire recorded three RBI on the day, highlighted by a two-run single in the third inning against App State, that gave UNCW a 3-2 lead before the Mountaineers rallied with one run in each of the final two innings for the win.

App State's Camryn Fisher (1-0) struck out five in the complete-game effort while UNCW's Makayla Huddleston (0-1) surrendered one earned run in four relief innings.

In the second contest, UNCW built an early 3-0 lead with runs driven in by Allison Corbin, Grace Hennessy and Brookshire, who also contributed in a four-run sixth inning that featured a two-run single by Relay.

Sophomore Lynsie Herman (1-0) fired four innings of two-run ball while freshman Camille Hamilton earned her first career save in her collegiate debut with five strikeouts in three scoreless relief innings.

The Seahawks return to action on Saturday against George Washington and Kennesaw State.
