UConn Strikes For Three In The Ninth To Top UNCW

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UConn plated three runs in the top of the ninth to knock off UNCW, 5-2, on Friday in the first of a three-game series at Brooks Field.

The Huskies improved to 4-5 with their second straight win while the Seahawks fell back again to .500 at 5-5.

UConn took advantage of a hit batter and four walks to plate the go-ahead runs in the top of the ninth. Nater Wachter, who finished with two hits, provided the go-ahead hit in the eighth, a single to left against reliever TJ Ziermann.

Aiden Evans had a pair of singles for the Seahawks and Jake Bechtel drove in both runs with his first homer of the season coming in the third inning that gave UNCW a 2-1 lead.

Chris Polemeni scored three runs for the Huskies. He was hit twice and drew a walk. Chase Taylor doubled and knocked in two runs.

Francesco Capocci (0-1) took the loss while Charlie Hale (1-0) was credited with the win. Hale tossed 4.2 shutout innings.

The series resumes on Saturday with a 4 p.m. start.
