Baseball Evens Series With Extra-Innings Win

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Kevin Jones led off the bottom of the 12th with a double and came around to score the winning run on a throwing error as UNCW tied its series against UConn on Saturday with a 2-1 win at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks improved to 6-5 with their second extra-inning win of the season, while the Huskies dropped to 4-6. 

Jones, a graduate student, led off the bottom of the 12th with a double to right and scored two batters later when a throw to first base on a sacrifice bunt sailed down the right field line for an error.

Trevor Lucaswho collected two hits, knotted the game at 1-all in the eighth with a double that plated pinch hitter Mason Hughes, who opened the frame with a single and moved to second on a sac bunt by JP Pennella.

Jones finished with a pair of hits for the Seahawks in what turned into a pitcher's duel.

Seahawk starter Cooper Allen tied his career-high with 10 strikeouts for the second straight outing. He allowed a run on three hits over a career-long eight innings.

For UConn, starter Caden Stuchy struck out a career-best 12 in seven innings of four-hit, shutout baseball.

Mason Ruh (2-0) was credited with the win while Paxton Meyers was saddled with the loss to move to 0-2. Clay Masonis gave UNCW three innings of one-hit relief.

Chris Polemeni led UConn with two hits.

Both teams combined for 12 hits and 30 strikeouts on the afternoon.

The series concludes on Sunday with a 1 p.m. start.
