Seahawks Hand Bucs First Loss Of 2026

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Junior Danny O'Brien homered to lead off the top of the 11th inning and freshman Jackson Caldwell struck out the side in the bottom of the inning as UNCW clipped Charleston Southern, 11-10, on Wednesday at Nielson Field at CSU Ballpark.

The Seahawks upped their record to 5-4 with the win while handing the Buccaneers their first loss of the season to dip to 7-1.

O'Brien launched his first homer of the season on losing pitcher Hayden Henry's (0-1) first offering of the inning. In the bottom of the frame, Caldwell (1-0), who struck out five in 2.2 innings of hitless, shutout baseball, set down the Bucs in order to close out the game.

Trevor Lucas and Cole Nelson both homered twice for the Seahawks, who finished with 14 hits on the game. Lucas knocked in four while Nelson added a third hit and scored three runs. JP Pennella added a three-hit effort at the top of the order as his batting average moved to .522.

UNCW starter Alex Sobol allowed three runs, two earned, on one hit over his five innings of work. He walked two, hit two and struck out five.
Akex Marot and Gavin Spiers both homered for the Bucs.

CSU managed just five hits and drew five walks but struck out 15 times.

UNCW homered a season-high five times.

The Seahawks return to Brooks Field this weekend, hosting UConn for three games, beginning on Friday at 4 p.m.
