Thornton Blanks Rams, UNCW Takes Series

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW junior Bromley Thornton delivered a career-long six shutout innings as the Seahawks clinched their series with Fordham on Sunday with a 7-0 win at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks ran their record to 4-3 while the Rams fell to 1-6 to open the season. With its second straight shutout, UNCW ran its shutout streak to 23 innings.

Thornton (1-1) scattered three singles, walked two, and struck out seven in picking up the win. Relievers Jackson CaldwellAlex Sobol, and Mason Murdock closed out the shutout win, each with a scoreless frame.

UNCW's Danny O'Brien opened the scoring with a two-out double in the first inning, and Aiden Evans added a two-run single in the third to highlight a three-run stanza for a 4-0 lead.

O'Brien added an RBI single and sac flies from Micah Simpson and Jake Bechtel pushed the lead to 7-0 in the fifth.

JP Pennella and Howie Rickett had two hits apiece for the Seahawks.

Taylor Kirk, Anthony Grabau, and Joey Donnelly had singles for the Rams.

Starter Aidan Dowd (0-1) was tagged with the loss for Fordham. The righthander allowed four runs, three earned, over four innings of work.

The Seahawks conclude their eight-game homestand on Tuesday with a 4 p.m. start against Duke.
