Pirates Turn Back Seahawks, 6-1

GREENVILLE, North Carolina – The UNCW softball team dropped a 6-1 decision at East Carolina on Wednesday evening at the Max R. Joyner Family Stadium.

The Pirates improved to 6-5 while the Seahawks fell to 4-5 ahead of their home weekend tournament against Georgetown, Lafayette and Iona.

East Carolina, who totaled 13 hits, plated two runs on three hits and an error in the top of the first and then followed it with a three-run second highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of cleanup hitter Jenna Krol, who, along with leadoff-hitter Kanisha Anderson, had three hits.

UNCW got on the board in the top of the fourth when Grace Hennessy crossed home from third as Madison Biddle attempted to steal second.

Junior Averie Daughtry and freshman Becca Merrick both fashioned two-hit games for the Seahawks, who worked a season-high five walks.

ECU's Sydney Rainford (1-0) earned the win while UNCW's Makayla Huddleston (1-4) was on the losing end of the decision.

The two teams will meet again in Wilmington on Mar. 31.
