Softball Secures Saturday Sweep in Spartanburg

SPARTANBURG, South Carolina – The UNCW softball team rolled to a Saturday sweep over UMBC and St. Bonaventure to close out play at the Wofford Invitational at Hope Field.

The Seahawks (4-4) run-ruled the Retrievers 8-0 in five innings, behind freshman Camille Hamilton's first career shutout and win with six strikeouts. Junior Makayla Huddleston also tossed five innings of one-run ball in UNCW's 8-1 victory over the Bonnies (0-8).

Both pitchers were keyed by eight runs by the Seahawks, highlighted by home runs off the bats of Averie Daughtry against UMBC and Becca Merrick's first career round-tripper vs. SBU.

UNCW totaled 21 hits, including seven for extra bases, on Saturday. The Seahawks fashioned three triples against the Bonnies while senior Grace Hennessy enjoyed her second career three-hit day.

UMBC's Jayda Koontz (0-2) and SBU's Ava Lomelin (0-1) tagged with losses in their respective games.

Sunday's contest vs. host Wofford has been canceled due to expected weather. UNCW resumes its season at East Carolina on Wednesday.
