Diamond Hawks Drop Season Opener

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Trevor Lucas collected three hits and scored a run for UNCW, but Maryland had four players with multi-hit games in a 5-3 win for the Terps on Friday at Brooks Field.

In the season-opener for both programs, the Seahawks dropped their first season opener since the 2019 season.

While Lucas had three hits, newcomer Jake Bechtel doubled twice in his Seahawk debut, while Kevin Jones added a pair of hits. Both knocked in a run.

Connor Marshburn (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs, one earned, over five innings. He struck out five over that span.

Lance Williams (1-0) picked up the win, going five innings and allowing one run and fanning six. Christofer Cespedes nailed down a four-inning save.

Rylen Stockton led the terps with a pair of hits, including a home run in the sixth inning.

The Seahawks and Terps retake the field on Saturday when they open a doubleheader with a 1 p.m. start.
