Diamond Hawks Split Twinbill, Drop Series To Terps

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Cooper Allen struck out five over five shutout innings, and Kevin Jones collected three hits as UNCW upended Maryland, 8-4, in the opener of a doubleheader on Sunday at Brooks Field. Maryland earned the series win, though, with a 5-1 win in the nightcap.

The Terrapins closed out the weekend with a 2-1 record while the Seahawks finished 1-2.

Allen (1-0), who was making his fourth career start, scattered two singles over his career-long five innings, and tied his career high with those five strikeouts.

The Seahawks built a 6-0 lead through six innings with a run in the third, two more in the fourth, and exploded for three in the fifth. Howie Rickett opened the scoring with an RBI single, and Mason Hughes doubled in another run one batter later. JP Pennella, who finished with two hits and a pair of stolen bases, then doubled in the third and final run.

Maryland cut its deficit to 6-4 in the top of the sixth, with Ryan Costello powering the outburst with a three-run homer.

UNCW freshman reliever TJ Ziermann earned the save, pitching out of an eighth-inning jam with a pair of strikeouts with the tying runs on base.
In the second game, Maryland's Jake Yeager and Logan Hastings combined for nine innings of 1-run, four-hit baseball. Hastings (1-0) earned the win, going five innings and not allowing a hit.

UNCW continues its homestand on Feb. 18 at 4 p.m. against Merrimack.
