PHILADELPHIA – The UNCW women's soccer team earned a 3-0 road victory over Drexel on Sunday behind two goals from
Hailey Longwell, a goal from
Abbey Pierson and a strong defensive performance that limited the Dragons to three shots.
"The stamina of this team is inspiring," head coach
Chris Neal said. "A five-day, two-match road swing in driving wind and rain, on turf, was no easy task. To be up 2-0 at halftime with the wind and rain in our faces was important. We are very proud of this group and looking forward to getting back to Wilmington for some well-earned rest and prep for another road match next Sunday."
Longwell struck early, finding the back of the net in the opening two minutes with a tap-in off a pass from
Caigan Leonard to give the Seahawks (9-0-6, 4-0-2 CAA) the lead.
UNCW doubled its advantage in the 33rd minute when Pierson scored off an assist from Longwell, sending the Seahawks into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
Longwell struck again in the 61st minute, finishing a turnaround shot to extend the lead to 3-0 and cap the scoring. This marked Longwell's eighth goal of the season.
The defensive unit of
Rachel Fry, Macy Lutz, Alyssa Chuderewicz, Ava Chuderewicz and
Brenna Booth helped preserve the shutout, limiting Drexel (5-7-2, 1-4-1 CAA) to three shots, including just one on goal.
The Seahawks continue their road stretch Sunday, Oct. 18, with a 1 p.m. matchup at Charleston. The match will stream on FloCollege.
