Volleyhawks Hand Pride First CAA Loss

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW handed Coastal Athletic Association co-leader Hofstra its first conference loss on Saturday with a 3-1 (25-14, 25-19, 18-25, 25-14) win at Hanover Hall.

The Seahawks, who snapped a 12-match losing skid to Hofstra, ran their record to 9-9 overall and 4-2 in the league, while the Pride dipped to 12-4 and 7-1.

UNCW slugged an impressive .339 during the match as Sam Vanda and Elaina Murphy finished with 15 and 14 kills, respectively.

Gaby Zovko ran the Seahawks' offense, finishing with 42 assists and five kills of her own.

Lily Goyer, Nadia Wasilewski and Lauren Lewis combined for 20 kills and just three errors in 39 attacks.

Beatriz Bragal led the Pride with 15 kills and 10 digs, for a double-double.

The Seahawks hit a season-best .514 in the opening set behind eight kills from Murphy.

In the second set, with the score tied at 14-all, UNCW pieced together a 4-0 run to gain separation, 18-14.

Hofstra never trailed in the third set by hitting .409 behind five kills from Braga.

In the final set, Lewis capped a 5-0 UNCW run with a kill that gave UNCW a 12-6 lead.

The Seahawks host Coastal Carolina on Oct. 14 in the final non-conference match. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
